The sprawling, industrial-chic downtown gastropub Mikkeller comes by way of Copenhagen, as do the stunning design features, including an exposed vaulted ceiling and quirky, minimalist cartoon walls.
Cool. So who’s there?
The crowd is a jolly, jovial bunch from day to night, bringing a classic European beer hall to Cali.
How are the drinks?
This is no doubt one of the largest gastropubs on the West Coast, with a menu to match. With more than 50 esoteric, hard-to-find global microbrews on a rotating seasonal tap, there’s something to excite everyone, every time.
Worth ordering something to eat, too?
The Scandinavian-inspired bar bites include smørrebrød, house-smoked sausages, and top-notch cheese and charcuterie plates piled with the likes of duck ham and chicken liver mousse. And if you’re needing a pick-me-up after your beer brunch, there’s Kaffebaren, a third-wave coffee shop serving Dark Matter brews and an edited menu of Danish panini and salads to go.
Did the staff do you right?
Bar staff are incredibly attentive and knowledgeable of the lesser-known beers on the extensive menu, and they’re passionate about sharing the quirks and nuances of each.
Wrap it up: what are we coming here for?
This place is pretty great any time of day, from breakfast at the coffee bar, to day-drinking with friends, or a casual date night that lingers into a nightcap. You really can’t go wrong.
